Ethereum Developers Launch New Test Network “Hoodi” for Pectra Update
In a surprising turn of events, Ethereum developers have introduced a new test network named Hoodi as part of the ongoing efforts to implement the Pectra update. The testing phase, which commenced in March, has been fraught with challenges. If successful, the update is slated for deployment on the main network by the end of April.
Challenges Faced Before Pectra Integration
The developers are currently grappling with significant hurdles ahead of the integration of the Pectra upgrade into the main network. Following unsuccessful tests on February 24 and March 5, the team decided to establish the Hoodi test network. This new network is crucial for ensuring the successful application of Pectra to the main Ethereum network.
Overcoming Technical Issues with the Hoodi Test Network
Recent technical difficulties within the Ethereum ecosystem have compelled developers to devise innovative solutions. The teams encountered unexpected issues while preparing for the Pectra upgrade’s integration, prompting them to create a third test network to secure the process.
Initially, the Pectra upgrade was intended to reach the Ethereum main network in March, having been integrated into the Holesky test network on February 24. However, due to technical glitches during the upgrade process, the operation could not be completed, forcing the development team to investigate the root causes of the issues.
The second attempt took place on March 5 within the Sepolia test network, where a “corner case” was identified that led to the creation of empty blocks. This intervention, allegedly executed by an unknown attacker, exacerbated the disruptions in the process.
In light of these developments, Ethereum core developers opted to create the new test network, Hoodi, to facilitate more robust testing of the Pectra upgrade. Launched on March 17, the Hoodi test network is expected to make the Pectra upgrade available by March 26. If no further issues arise during the upgrade process, Pectra could be integrated into the main network as early as April 25.
Progress Continues Despite Recent Testnet Issues
Despite the recent challenges faced by the testnet, the overall development of the Ethereum ecosystem continues to advance. On March 13, 2024, the network successfully completed the Dencun upgrade, which introduced numerous changes to the blockchain. Once a major concern, high gas fees are now a thing of the past. Following the Dencun upgrade, Ethereum’s gas fees have decreased by an impressive 95%, with average gas prices hitting a historic low of 0.28 gwei on March 23.
